Genre: Comedy | Horror

Producer Bo Zenga, the man responsible for the atrociously offensive Soul Plane and the original Scary Movie (which had its moments), makes his directorial debut with this whiff of foul stink. Stan Helsing can’t decide if it wants to be a straight up spoof, or if it wants to be a real, breathing legitimate movie with an actual plot. The jokes are straight up garbage (except for one truly funny gag that reveals why our hero and his beautiful girlfriend have broken up; I won’t ruin it for you). The story basically takes Hugh Jackman’s 2004 bomb Van Helsing and sticks it in present day, with our hero battling the greatest slashers in recent horror history. As a real movie, that would be awesome. Especially if it were truly Jason, Freddy, Michael, Chucky, Leatherface, and Pinhead that Stan was up against. Instead, we get goofy spoof versions of these characters. And they are all quite stupid. Still, this idea could have worked on some level. But Zenga does absolutely nothing with the concept. He just gives us a super lame road picture that hardly has an ounce of class to its name. Stan Helsing (a truly great Steve Howey; heck he saves this from being completely unwatchable) is a video store clerk and part time stoner. His Halloween mission? Deliver some porno tapes while on the way to a party.

He crawls into a van with Desi Lydic and Diora Baird, two of the sexiest woman working in low budget films today. At the very least, Zenga’s trio makes this otherwise unbearable exercise in stupidity a sexy little piece of eye candy that I wouldn’t mind finding in my Halloween pumpkin. Though, he then throws Keenan Thompson into the mix. And I’m not sure why. The poor guy doesn’t really belong here. He’s not a boyfriend of either Desi or Diora. Nor does he seem to be that close to Stan Helsing. I get how having a funny fat dude adds comedic relief. But Keenan isn’t very funny, or all that fat. He can be hilarious when he wants, but Zenga seems to have him reigned in here. And its lame. Our gang of Scooby-Doo wannabes basically drives around looking for an address to drop the porn off at. In the interim, the run into Fweddy, Pleatherface, Pinwheel Head, and a couple other Looney Tune slasher knock-offs carrying leaf blowers and wearing smiley-faced hockey masks. Nothing eventful ever happens, though. You’d expect some awesome battle to take place. All we get is a karaoke-off with our beloved faux-slashers singing a parody of the Village People’s YMCA. There is a lot of potential in this idea. Sadly, ever ounce of it is waisted. But, goddamn it, I think I am in love with Desi. So, yeah, I could watch it again.

	The Look The film is presented in its original cinematic aspect ratio of 1.85:1. In color. The runtime is an hour and twenty-seven minutes. Stan Helsing has been rated R (there is no unrated version; its kind of tame).

	The Sound The film is presented in English Dolby Digital.

	The Packaging The original theatrical poster for Stan Helsing is great. It presents its three main leads in all their sexed-up glory, and offers an idea that this might actually be pretty cool (even though its not). The new DVD cover is a rip-off of Scary Movie’s theatrical one sheet, and all of its sequels. That’s a known brand that sells, so it’s obvious why they chose to follow the pattern. But it still smells like a fake. If I hadn’t seen the first artwork that came out in support of the film, I would probably leave this one in the five-dollar trash bin where it belongs.
